Current report have it that the giant search platform Google is famous for its Android operating system installed on most modern smartphones. Now the corporation is preparing for a revolution in the world of video games.
Now, What’s happening?
Today, March 19, Google will hold its presentation at the Game Developers Conference international conference of video game developers in San Francisco.
It is expected that the corporation will show the world its vision of the future of video games in the form of its own streaming service (a system that allows you to connect over the network to remote servers and broadcast the video game image to a low-power or portable device).
For 2018, total revenues in the gaming industry reached $ 136 billion, showing a tendency to 15% growth next year.
Obviously, Google is determined to move from the leading position of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, who own both virtual and hardware gaming space.
Now, in order to play a modern game, you need to acquire a gaming console or an expensive computer, after which you will have to purchase the game. The concept of the cloud involves a subscription, a flat fee for access to the entire library of games.
The company has probably become accustomed to streaming through the implementation of Google Music and YouTube Premium programs, which will allow you to create your Netflix in the world of video games. At the same time, many industry leaders and analysts express open skepticism.
Is that possible?
Yes, these ideas have already tried to implement, and not just one company. But at the end of last year, the Project Stream beta test was launched in collaboration with Ubisoft .
Then anyone could launch Assassin’s Creed Odyssey directly from the Chrome browser. For this, a regular netbook, for example, a Chromebook, was sufficient. The game was quietly broadcast in FullHD-resolution, with a frame rate of 60 FPS and without any delays in the response when running.
Judging by the latest patents of the company, in the future we will be able to see a separate Yeti controller, which will act as a manipulator and communications operator with Project Stream. A large role in managing the intermediate process will take voice commands, just like in Google Now.
Despite the decisive mood and intermediate successes, analysts from IDC, an international analytics company in the field of information technologies, say that Google does not have a unique idea about streaming games.
The report states that there have been several attempts to make something similar, and the most convincing example is the PlayStation project. Sony managed to organize a library of 750 games from the PlayStation 2 and 3 and make it available for streaming on the fourth generation of the console and PC. The success of the project is due to the existing base of games, which is combined with a suitable infrastructure.
The next competitor to Google may be the already existing GeForce Now, which requires the user to have a Mac or a PC with Nvidia integrated graphics or discrete graphics, or an NVIDIA Shield console.
The service offers access to four hundred projects, but is still in beta mode. Apparently, even if there is a decent iron on the receiving side, the implementation is not easy.
Analysts also walked through OnLive, a platform that was similar in ideology, which closed in 2015, selling Sony assets. The fault was the insufficient number of active subscribers, which made the business model unprofitable.
Patrick Moorhead, lead analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, said that it would be extremely difficult for Google to implement a decent streaming service. He referred to the average success of existing projects on streaming music and films, noting that his expectations are not high.
Nevertheless, he considers the company’s intentions quite reasonable. Since it has a large ecosystem for developers, thanks to the successful implementation of game projects based on Android. And it is logical that Google is ready to declare to the whole world that it is serious about cloud games.
The user must have a stable and high-speed Internet connection. Using the example of GeForce Now, we can talk about speeds of about 50 Mbit / s. And this is only half the trouble, because in the absence of at least some computing power on the client side, the company’s server must take over the job, ensuring an acceptable response time to commands.
But the main problem is that Google does not have any AAA-class content. You can not just invest in infrastructure, forgetting about the content that it will serve.
The process of creating video games has long been not cheap and time consuming. And if developers do not see the prospects and find more favorable conditions on the side, Project Stream will be one of the most expensive failures.
Last week, Microsoft demonstrated its vision of cloud gaming called xCloud. Although the product is clearly raw, it should be noted that the corporation has many years of experience working with the game community and developers.
Here you can add experience in the implementation of consoles and an existing subscription service Xbox Gold, on the basis of which xCloud can develop.
And if you believe the reports of The Information and The Verge, Amazon is also preparing to submit its own stream service. There is clearly no need to doubt the existing computing power, the company has experience in transmitting content to 4K HDR users, which is comparable in load to cloud gaming.
All this leads to the fact that Google clearly does not want to jump into the train, which has already left. And at least according to IDC’s forecast, the dawn of streaming will occur around 2021, the war is already unfolding for content publishers. And whoever offers the best conditions for placement and monetization will be the leader in streaming games.
