iOS 15 First Impressions: What I didn’t know I wanted…

iOS 15 in my opinion was the star of the
00:02
show of yesterday’s keynote everything
00:04
else was
00:05
somewhat interesting but for the most
00:06
part this is where i think the most
00:08
day-to-day differences will be noticed
00:10
so
00:10
i have now super officially and totally
00:13
legally
00:14
installed the developer beta on my
00:16
primary device the 12 mini and after
00:18
using it for the past couple hours i
00:19
have some initial impressions to discuss
00:21
let’s begin
00:24
first of all the wallpaper is wonderful
00:26
and iconic
00:28
thanks for watching have a great day
00:31
besides that point there’s actually a
00:33
bunch of features that i’ve noticed on
00:34
day one
00:35
that i’m already in love with and
00:37
appreciating greatly probably a few hot
00:39
takes mixed in there but simultaneously
00:41
there’s also a bunch of features that i
00:43
think are really cool and i’m really
00:45
excited for
00:45
but are currently not working on the
00:47
developer beta for me so
00:49
i thought i’d first talk about the ones
00:51
i do notice and can utilize so for one
00:53
i’m just gonna start with the most
00:54
noticeable difference to me it’s the
00:56
redesigned safari i could see
00:58
a lot of people not liking this and
01:00
because it’s so different
01:02
and it takes such a drastic you know 180
01:05
degree turn in terms of where the tabs
01:07
icon is where the url is it’s going to
01:09
be a learning curve for a lot of people
01:11
out there
01:12
but after using it for a while i’m
01:14
actually loving it because i don’t have
01:16
that many work apps on my phone because
01:18
i take this you know outside of the
01:20
office and it’s easy to get distracted
01:22
so
01:22
twitter or creator studio or instagram
01:24
none of those apps i keep stored on my
01:26
phone which means to keep up to date
01:27
with the news
01:28
i actually use safari quite a bit
01:30
directly off of my phone
01:32
and the fact that you can now switch
01:34
between tabs
01:35
so seamlessly just by swiping alongside
01:38
the bottom
01:39
and it’s basically like navigating
01:41
different apps with the home bar
01:42
except now you’re navigating different
01:44
tabs it’s also so much easier especially
01:46
for one-handed users to
01:48
just tap the url the keyboard pops right
01:50
up and you can select exactly
01:52
what you want to look up and having the
01:53
tabs icon be right in the bottom right
01:56
corner
01:56
is extremely convenient and i’ll admit
01:59
yeah it’s still taking me a little bit
02:01
of getting used to because sometimes
02:02
when i open safari i still want to
02:04
instantly tap the top because that’s
02:06
where i’m used to the search bar being
02:07
this
02:08
is something i didn’t realize could be
02:10
improved so drastically because now that
02:11
they have
02:12
moved it it’s so much easier to reach
02:14
and it’s so much easier to switch
02:16
between tabs than it was before and
02:18
because it’s so different like i said
02:20
i bet a lot of people aren’t going to
02:21
like this and once ios 15 launches
02:24
in the fall for everyone i bet a bunch
02:25
of people are going to get angry
02:27
hopefully apple maybe makes it an option
02:29
to go back to the old method because i
02:31
could see a lot of people still
02:32
preferring that but for my own personal
02:34
reasons i’ve just completely fallen in
02:36
love with the redesigned safari
02:38
application
02:39
simply because of how easy it is to
02:41
manage tabs and because i use that app a
02:42
lot it’s something i very much
02:44
appreciate and i’m very thankful
02:46
that it’s working reliably on the first
02:48
developer beta the other thing i noticed
02:50
very regularly because this is a
02:52
situation i ran into
02:53
a lot was the updates to messages i
02:56
don’t care so much about the whole
02:57
memories
02:58
feature of like hey photos app is going
03:00
to instantly
03:01
compile a bunch of photos that have been
03:03
texted to you but what i’m more
03:04
interested in
03:05
is that when someone texts you a bunch
03:07
of pictures it doesn’t create like this
03:09
giant wall of texts that you have to
03:11
scroll through the fact that it just
03:12
gives you a nice little library for you
03:14
to swipe through
03:15
and there’s a little option above those
03:17
to just see all of the photos laid out
03:19
at once
03:20
it’s so much cleaner it makes our
03:22
imessage threads a lot easier to read
03:24
and that’s something that happens to me
03:26
all the time like constantly people will
03:28
be like hey i’m gonna text you all these
03:30
pictures from this hike or from
03:32
this event and it instantly fills up the
03:34
thread and the fact that it’s so clean
03:36
and so simple to swipe through them now
03:38
i love that i use it all the time and
03:40
it’s already working today so i very
03:42
much appreciate it something i didn’t
03:44
have on my ios 15 wish list but
03:46
thankfully apple thought of it facebook
03:48
messenger was also doing it better than
03:49
imessage in my opinion because it would
03:51
just show you a grid of all the pictures
03:52
and you can just tap which one you want
03:54
it to blow up but in my opinion
03:55
this is even better than that because
03:57
you can actually see each individual
03:59
picture really well
04:00
and just swipe through the ones you care
04:01
for or open them all up thank you apple
04:04
messages is the superior platform don’t
04:06
add me the other thing i noticed
04:07
certainly on day one and i was actually
04:09
very impressed by was the updated
04:11
weather app you can tell apple’s
04:12
purchase of dark sky is going directly
04:15
into ios 15 because there’s a whole lot
04:17
more data now in there whether it be the
04:19
temperature map
04:20
or the uv index map or the air quality
04:23
map being able to just
04:25
go outside your area and see what the
04:27
other temperatures are looking like
04:28
having all of these
04:29
individual little widgets for the
04:31
sunsets precipitation the wind speed and
04:33
the direction of that wind speed and
04:34
everything
04:35
it’s very clean and the animations they
04:37
brought to the weather app are gorgeous
04:38
and beautiful
04:39
and because it’s free and there’s no ads
04:42
i do use the weather app on my iphone
04:44
pretty regularly and i’m very happy with
04:46
the design changes they made for it
04:47
because it feels like all that crap the
04:49
weatherman tries to brag about like only
04:51
they have this precipitation
04:53
information now i can just pull it up on
04:55
my phone and be like uh yeah i can see
04:57
all that stuff
04:58
in real time it’ll tell me like minutes
05:00
before it starts raining so who needs
05:02
you
05:02
weatherman i have ios 15. i’ll also give
05:05
some credit to the redesigned messages
05:07
notifications i don’t know why it’s
05:09
never occurred to me but it does
05:11
actually feel somewhat unnatural that
05:13
every time i get an imessage text from
05:15
someone it doesn’t really show their
05:17
face or their picture you know it just
05:19
kind of shows the messages icon and then
05:21
their name
05:22
which that’s not intuitive we have
05:23
pixels we have displays now we should be
05:26
able to just see the face
05:27
that’s how we should identify people and
05:29
now since i’ve been getting text
05:31
messages on ios 15
05:32
notifications look a whole lot cleaner i
05:34
love the way they stack them together
05:36
and i love the way i can see someone’s
05:38
face as soon as they text me that just
05:40
feels so much more natural and it’s one
05:42
of those things i didn’t
05:43
think i would care much about until i
05:45
started having it it’s a ui improvement
05:47
but it’s one that i notice quite
05:49
regularly because i get a lot of texts
05:51
from people that’s like
05:52
my go-to use for this thing and now
05:53
being able to just have a much cleaner
05:55
animation
05:56
and being able to see their face
05:58
whenever they send me a text that just
05:59
looks awesome i dig it and i hope apple
06:02
does that with the rest of the ecosystem
06:04
especially the apple watch i wouldn’t
06:05
mind if instead of just a big green
06:07
imessage icon whenever you get a text it
06:09
would just be the person who’s
06:11
contacting you’s face maybe a little
06:13
green
06:13
message circle in the bottom corner but
06:15
i do have watch os 8 but the only reason
06:18
i wanted to get the beta was because i
06:19
wanted to try the portrait mode watch
06:21
face and
06:22
it doesn’t appear to be there yet so
06:24
that’s a bit frustrating anyway the maps
06:26
update was also really interesting i was
06:28
driving to a new place i’d never been
06:30
for yesterday and
06:32
while i don’t have the intricate map
06:34
data that apple was bragging about
06:35
having in like san francisco and stuff i
06:38
already do notice how simple it is to
06:39
switch between like looking at the
06:41
entire journey or doing turn-by-turn
06:43
directions
06:44
and just having one icon for do you want
06:46
sound or do you not want sound it looks
06:48
cleaner and the way the camera follows
06:50
the where the little arrowhead navigates
06:52
as you drive
06:53
so i appreciate the maps updates but
06:55
there’s also a couple other things that
06:57
i’m really really excited to try out
06:58
that don’t appear to be quite ready yet
07:00
so for one
07:01
something i kind of glossed over in
07:03
yesterday’s video that i think is
07:04
really really important apple id and no
07:07
not like your apple account i’m talking
07:10
about
07:10
apple now saying you’ll be able to add
07:11
your driver’s license to the wallet app
07:14
this is something i’ve been asking for
07:16
for years i just didn’t know exactly how
07:18
possible it was but
07:19
after looking it up yesterday it does
07:21
look like many states in the us
07:23
are looking into having digital drivers
07:25
licenses
07:26
in the future and this will not just be
07:28
essentially holding up a picture of your
07:30
driver’s license or your id
07:32
and the officer looks at the picture and
07:34
goes okay that’s your information no
07:35
this should actually end up being
07:37
somewhat like
07:37
a transit card or even more like a
07:40
credit card because you’ll be able to
07:41
activate the driver’s license via face
07:44
id and it’ll warn you all the
07:45
information it’s going to give
07:46
if you get pulled over or if you’re at
07:48
an airport and they want to check your
07:49
id then you should be able to just tap
07:51
your phone
07:52
against some kind of nfc reader that the
07:55
officer
07:55
or the airport may have and then they
07:58
register all of your information that
07:59
way it’s currently not legal
08:01
and also probably because it’s currently
08:03
not legal it’s not present in the wallet
08:05
app even if it wasn’t legal i was really
08:07
interested in just kind of adding my
08:08
driver’s license
08:09
into the wallet app just so that i it
08:11
could be there and i could feel like hey
08:13
i got my whole wallet right in here but
08:15
i love the idea of traveling more
08:16
minimally
08:17
and carrying less and less things on me
08:19
directly so
08:20
if california passes that law by the end
08:23
of this year and they do allow us to
08:24
have our driver’s licenses
08:26
built into our phone first of all just
08:27
make sure you have a charger in your car
08:29
because it now becomes your
08:30
responsibility to provide your driver’s
08:32
license to the officer you’re not going
08:34
to be able to get away with
08:35
okay let me see some id well the id is
08:38
on my phone and my phone is dead right
08:41
now
08:41
if you’re not carrying around your
08:42
physical driver’s license and
08:44
you’re relying on it to be on your phone
08:46
and then your phone dies that
08:48
responsibility falls on you that
08:49
instantly means you are now driving
08:51
around without a license which is not
08:52
legal so just make sure there’s a
08:54
charger in the car most people i think
08:55
do have some kind of phone charger
08:57
equipped with them if your car is too
08:59
old just bring a battery pack just in
09:01
case but
09:01
overall i’m willing to take that
09:03
responsibility because it theoretically
09:04
means i could leave my wallet at home
09:07
not have to bring my driver’s license
09:08
with me wherever i go because it’ll just
09:10
be baked into here and i can use apple
09:12
pay at the majority of places i go to
09:14
so overall i’m for this ultra minimalist
09:17
future but that feature’s not ready yet
09:19
so hopefully it is later this year the
09:21
other big updates that
09:22
i thought were kind of stealing the show
09:23
probably the most big announcements
09:25
apple made were directly with facetime
09:28
we’ve been asking for apple to allow us
09:29
to you know share our screen
09:31
via facetime for so long and we got that
09:33
and share play which all sounds amazing
09:36
being able to listen to music or watch
09:37
movies with people during the facetime
09:39
call
09:40
and every time i try to start or answer
09:42
a call
09:43
with facetime on my phone the app
09:45
instantly crashes
09:46
and i can’t even close the application
09:48
it does not work at all i cannot see the
09:50
other person i’m talking to they can see
09:52
me
09:53
which i guess you know that’s kind of a
09:54
privacy concern but simultaneously this
09:56
is a developer beta
09:58
install dev betas at your own risk so if
10:00
you were hoping to demonstrate face time
10:02
with the dev beta and that’s what you
10:04
were excited for
10:05
some other youtubers may be having it
10:07
work flawlessly for them just keep in
10:08
mind
10:09
i’m gonna go on the record and say it’s
10:11
not working at all every time i try to
10:12
start a call it just freezes up
10:14
okay it’s not working at all and i would
10:16
love to try out the new grid view i want
10:18
to try out portrait mode via facetime i
10:20
want to try out the different microphone
10:22
isolation modes
10:23
i’m sure those features will get more
10:24
ironed out in future updates and
10:26
by the fall it will probably be pretty
10:28
stable and reliable but currently
10:30
not working too well for me so i can’t
10:32
demonstrate facetime for you at this
10:34
point but i would certainly like to
10:36
and i like that we can send facetime
10:38
links to people now even on android and
10:40
windows
10:40
that’s the kind of openness that i was
10:42
not expecting apple to have
10:44
via facetime but even when steve jobs
10:46
initially introduced it they wanted it
10:48
to be kind of an
10:49
open api but it didn’t really go through
10:51
that way now it seems like they’re kind
10:52
of following through
10:54
on that original vision so overall i’m
10:56
sure there’s a ton more features in ios
10:58
15 that you guys appreciate the point of
11:00
this video wasn’t to go into every
11:02
single change but
11:03
mainly i just wanted to keep you guys
11:04
posted on what i appreciate primarily
11:06
what’s standing out to me within the
11:08
first day
11:08
and i would love to hear what you guys
11:09
think is an underrated update from ios
11:12
15 that we were not expecting
11:14
what are not enough people talking about
11:15
what should i try that i haven’t done
11:18
yet
11:18
feel free to let me know this is your
11:19
apple shape here i’ll see you guys in
11:20
the next
